Gary Allan and his band members may have new guitars, but they’re not happy about it. The singer and his crew lost all their equipment in the tornado that hit the Big Valley Jamboree in Alberta, Canada on Aug. 1.

“It’s been really weird lately [because] everybody’s got new stuff,” says Gary. “We’re replacing every guitar, and some we had since we were 10 or 11. Even our bus got totaled. We came out of Canada that weekend as just a bunch of dudes with dreams.”

Gary says that thanks to friends such as LeAnn Rimes and Rascal Flatts, his band was loaned drum sets and other equipment, adding “It’s amazing the things you don’t think about, like cables and stuff. All of our equipment, including the bus, is in a warehouse in Nashville waiting to see what the insurance company is going to pay for it.”

When NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. opened his Whiskey River nightclub in downtown Charlotte, N.C., in April of last year, there was no question which performer he wanted for the opening night, invitation-only gala – Gary Allan.

“I had become a pretty good fan of his over the last couple of years, and he’s just put out some really amazing stuff,” Dale Jr. tells The Boot. “I was trying to find somebody I knew would be a big hit with everybody. I had never met him before, but he just seemed like a good fit. It was awesome to hear his songs in our bar. I’m sure the venues he plays are much grander than our bar in Charlotte, but it was a great experience to hear him and see the enthusiasm in not only him and the band, but everybody in the bar and how he really tied the place together.”

One glance and you can see this is no Brad Paisley you have on your hands. Not even a paisley pattern to be found here. It’s more like a tattoo with ink that tells a tale of hard-rockin,’ no-apologies country music that has traded in its twang for a gravelly growl. It’s freight-train-to-nowhere lonely at times. It’s Bakersfield staring down Nashville with hints of Zeppelin. It’s not George Strait; it’s George Bent.

We’re talking Gary Allan.

“I’ve never pushed for a certain image. I’ve just always done my own thing,” Allan has stated in previous interviews. “I think every record sort of reflects where I’m at, and I’ve made a ton of changes this year, just mentally and in how I’m approaching everything.”
