Gary Allan has no doubt made his mark on the country music industry. Hit songs like “Songs About Rain,” “Right Where I Need To Be,” “Watchin’ Airplanes,” and many more have made him a favorite amongst the modern country music fans. With his latest offering Get Off On The Pain, he continues to showcase all the elements that got him here as is evident with lead single “Today.” From the album opener and title track, “Get Off On The Pain,” you are met with his rock edge as he sings about his bad choices in love with all the wrong girls. This same rock edge is present throughout the album as he gets you moving right along with him on songs like “That Ain’t Gonna Fly,” which leans heavy on a shredding guitar riff to deliver the song. However, Allan also has been known for delivering a powerful and moving ballad and there is a good amount of those on here as well.
Gary talks about the many emotions of love on several occasions on the second part of the album with songs like “Kiss Me When I’m Down,” “When You Give Yourself Away,” and album closer “No Regrets.” Get Off On The Pain is simply Gary Allan doing what he does by fusing together a dusty country sound with a healthy offering of rock guitars complete with his rough around the edges vocals that fans have come to expect from him. His music has always walked closely along that border of mainstream country and a just left of the dial outlaw sound that has earned him five platinum and gold albums in a row so why change a good thing now? Gary doesn’t with this album and we are better off for it.
